Orbs of Prestige – Chapter 6 – Training

Syn hated Wilma. And loved her dearly. She was sadistic in her training. She whacked him, stabbed him, and crushed him more times than he could count, all with a malicious grin plastered on her face. She even had him fight her summoned badger multiple times. If anything, the badger was more sadistic than Wilma; he liked to play with his food.

But, she taught him how to fight and gave him ideas on how to build his character stats and Orbs in the future. She drilled him on the best ways to utilize his Mind Dampener skill, especially how to react when someone ambushed him and how to dodge with the least amount of movement.

After beating him senseless, she would say, “You need a shield. Or at least a defensive spell.” Or, “Find a flying summon of some sort. It’ll be able to scout ahead, distract the enemy, or attack from a distance.” Or, “Find teammates that compliment your Orbs and skill. At least an attacker or tank. You’ve got a unique skill, but you’ll need someone to watch your back and deal damage.” “Oh, get shoes as as soon as possible. You’ll need to keep your Speed stat up without increasing Agility. That’ll be tough.”

She also taught him about elements. After upgrading into a certain element, Orbs would gain additional effects. For example, if Syn upgraded his spear with Fire, it could cause Burn, dealing damage over time, and usually have a higher Power increase. However it’d be weak to Water defenses. Wilma recommended going with Ice attacks to slow the enemy, while equipping Wind armor to increase his Speed.

By the end, Syn could dodge the badger’s swipes, cast Water Blast at a moment’s notice, and use his spear with the correct grip and stance. However, one of the most difficult tasks Wilma had him do was to mercilessly stab her in the belly and neck over and over. Granted, she did the same to him to get him used to the pain, but the pure violence of the game made his head fuzzy and disconnected him from reality.

“I feel confident you won’t stab yourself in your foot,” Wilma teased after three hours. “Again.”

“That was one time!” Syn shot back.

Wilma laughed; she had been surprised by Syn when he kept on adding more time. “Make sure you come back to me when you level up and get a new Orb so I can beat, I mean, train you to use it properly.”

Syn laughed hoarsely. “I’ll be sure to do that. Hey, Wilma, do you know anyone I could hire to escort me? I would like to level up as soon as possible.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll ask around. Come with about 5 Coppers if you can tomorrow morning.”

“Thanks, I’ll be there. I’ll need to get a bit more money.” Syn yawned; he had constantly used Mind Dampener, so the three-hour session felt like nine. “If you don’t mind, I’m going to go to sleep. I’m exhausted.”

Trist: <I’m jealous. You get to learn how to fight. They put a bounty on my head, so I can’t enter any of the nearby settlements. I barely managed to escape when I tried.>

Syn: <Ah, crap. That doesn’t sound good. At least you’re leveling up. Level 5. That’s good. I’m still at Level 3.>

Trist: <Yeah, but I’m jumping at every shadow and can’t relax. Doesn’t help that monsters literally jump out of the shadows.>

Syn: <Yeah. Living here is so surreal. I’ll see if I can find a way to hide from the bounty. Did you find a place to sleep?>

Trist: <Yeah, I cleared a small dungeon, and now I own it. That’s how I leveled up. Picked up loot and a place to hide. Having a Room is nice.>

Syn: <Really? You own a dungeon now? What’s that like?>

Trist: <Pretty awesome. Dungeons spawn monsters, and I get to decide how they behave. I just have them protect my small territory. They collect resources which I use to spawn more and build up the dungeon.>

Syn: <Awesome! What monster does it spawn? What Orbs do you have now?>

Trist: <I gained the previous guardian’s Orb and made it the guardian. A Steam Serpent. It can become smoke for a short amount of time and spawns baby snakes. They’re pretty weak now, so I’m mostly hoping that nothing attacks me during the night. I have the Basic Tunic and a Smoke Screen spell at the Iron grade; Fire Dagger, Heat-Sensing Goggles, and Lightning Bolt are at Copper grade. The dungeon had a lot of loot, which I used a good portion of it to upgrade.>

Syn: <Three Copper rank Orbs? Awesome. Sounds like you’ve been successful.>

Trist: <I’ve had way too many close calls, so I’m going to play it safe the next day or two. Anyway, I’m off to bed. I’ve barely gotten any sleep since I started playing. Let me know when you’re heading out. Good luck.>

Syn had gotten about eight hours of sleep within slow time, but outside, less than three hours had passed. It was still the middle of the night. Another benefit of having a high Perception. He didn’t need to sleep as long but needed to sleep more often. He wondered if people with high Stamina even needed to sleep and how it would affect their real bodies.

Syn looked over the chat with Trist again. Despite the danger, Syn was looking forward to the new day. Trist was gaining levels and getting stronger. Syn was still Level 3. He needed to make more money and level up. He teleported to the Tavern. The buildings were open at all times.

A waitress, not Lily, glanced up with a yawn. “How can I be of service?”

“I’m here to use the kitchen,” Syn explained. “Tom and Lily hired me yesterday.”

“Ah, the recruit,” the waitress nodded. She waved him to the back room. “Go ahead. We’ve got a lot of stock to get caught up on.”

Syn thanked her and went to the kitchen. He cracked his neck and fingers. “Let’s get this started.”

Three hours later, Syn had managed to increase his money back up to a little over 10 Coppers, recuperating his training cost. He only worked on the Meals on the list and didn’t experiment. It was tough and mind-numbing work, but he was able to get in a groove and time passed quickly. It was too bad his Mind Dampener Skill didn’t make cooking go by faster.

Tom came in right when he was wrapping up. “You’re up bright and early,” he said. He looked over the Meals Syn had completed. “And you’ve finished almost everything on the list you can do. You’re going to drive me out of a job. I noticed you figured out a few recipes on your own as well.”

Syn chuckled. “I’m going to be out today and needed a bit of money. I’m sure you’ll have plenty of things to do. If not, take a vacation.” Syn winked.

Tom laughed. “I might do just that. Going out? Be careful, lad. It can be dangerous out there, especially at Level 3. I’d hate your potential to be cut short.”

They gave their farewells, and Syn teleported to the Hunter’s Hall. Wilma was behind the counter answering a question; twenty other people were perusing the quest board or talking to each other. Syn saw Jack and Kayla and walked up to them.

“If it isn’t my little friend,” Jack said as he punched Syn in the arm. “How goes it? You made those Fries at the Tavern. Excellent job. I knew I saw something special in you.”

“They were . . . good,” Kayla nodded.

Jack laughed. “Kayla rarely compliments, so take that as overwhelming praise. Ouch!” Jack rubbed his arm where Kayla had punched.

“Thanks, but it was supposed to be a secret,” Syn said, a little annoyed.

“Oh, please,” Jack said. “It doesn’t take a genius to put the dots together. A fresh new cook goes to the kitchen. Immediately after, a brand new meal appears.”

“Ah,” Syn said sheepishly. “I should have thought that would happen.”

“I doubt too many people took notice of you. Anyway, I see you posted a job,” Jack pointed out.

“I did?” Syn said, raising an eyebrow. He looked at the board and found what he was looking for.

<[Quest] Escort a Level 3 for three hours to help them level up.

  • Description: A newbie has requested aid to help level up. Escort Syn into the nearby forest and keep him safe for three hours.
  • Complete the following (0 / 1):
    • Hours in the forest with Syn. (0 / 3)
  • Rewards:
    • 5 Copper Chips

Accept: ~Yes~ | ~No~>

“Ah, that’s what Wilma meant by taking care of it,” Syn muttered.

“I say we take it,” Jack said to Kayla. “We were going to go out anyway. Might as well make a bit of money in the process.”

“That’s pocket change,” Kayla said but glanced at Syn. “Oh, fine. I agree. It’s only for a few hours.”

“Great!” Jack proclaimed as he took the quest and the paper disappeared. “No time like the present. Let us go forth!”

“Just a second, let me talk to Wilma quickly,” Syn said. Jack and Kayla nodded and waited by the door. Wilma finished talking to the person at the desk and motioned Syn forward.

“Good morning, newbie,” Wilma said. “I see you already found someone to accept your quest.”

“That surprised me you had made a quest,” Syn said. He put the five Copper Chips out on the table. “I hadn’t even paid for it yet.”

Wilma pushed the money back. “Keep it. Consider it a loan and pay me back when you can. Money is much tighter when you’re low leveled.”

“I, uh, I can’t . . . thank you,” Syn stuttered out. He collected the chips. “I promise I’ll pay you back.”

Wilma laughed. “I know you will. You’re a good lad.”

“Um, I’ve got a question,” Syn said, considering Trist’s situation. “Is there any way to change a person’s name?”

Wilma raised an eyebrow. “You’re only level 3. Why would you need to change your name? Is someone looking for you?”

“It’s for a friend.”

“Right, whatever you say,” Wilma winked. “Yeah, there are a few. There’s the easy way or there’s the hard way.”

“The easy way?”

“Yep. It’s to die. You’ll get reborn as a different person and get a new name. If you want to be thorough, you can ask someone to burn your Journal and cut off any connection to your current life.”

Syn paled a bit. “Yeah, that doesn’t help. At all. What’s the hard way?”

“You have to change a key aspect of yourself,” Wilma explained. “The most common way is to change your race. Not just upgrading, but going into a completely different race.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“You’re a Low Human, right? Mostly everyone here is that or the Iron grade Halfling Human. Well, if you upgrade to the Silver grade High Human, you won’t be able to change your name since your nature is basically the same. However, if you somehow become a completely different race, like an Elf or Saurian, your nature will be different.”

“How hard is it to do that?”

“Incredibly. Almost impossible in the first Realms. You can’t just become a half-step either, like Half-Elf. It has to be a full change.”

“That sounds difficult,” Syn said, feeling dejected. “Well, thanks for telling me.”

“No problem. Now, take care to not die out there. Jack can be unpredictable at the best of times.”

Syn joined Jack and Kayla. “Ok, I’m ready.”

A few minutes later, the group was standing outside the village. “Ok,” Jack said. “Captain Vers wants us to explore the Jungle Lynx’s territory to see if we can whittle down Favia [Outpost]’s defenses. Since you’re with us, we’ll just be exploring the edges of the territory and attacking the lower leveled cats. If we meet anybody from Favia or high-leveled monsters, let me and Kayla handle it. Otherwise, we’ll just stand by and step in if things get dangerous.”

“Fine by me,” Syn said, feeling the excitement and nervousness of the upcoming adventure. Wilma had explained that the lower-leveled monsters keep to the edge of their territory. They acted as scouts, and if too many low-leveled monsters get killed, the dungeon will send the higher-leveled monsters to defend the territory. The Grim Weaver dungeon was notorious for going overboard in the counter-attack.

He eyed his companion’s gear. Their armor looked much higher quality than his. Jack was fully decked out in what looked to be a chainmail tunic with a sword on his hip and well-worn shoes on his feet. Kayla’s armor looked lighter and more flexible, and her spear’s tip glowed a soft purple. She also had glasses on. They had a few Copper Orbs above their heads, which meant their Orbs were upgraded a grade.

They walked about a mile down the road. Jack explained that the Rock Toad dungeon was controlled by Captain Vers; each of the core members of the League that they belonged to owned a nearby dungeon that acted as a buffer to the Village, but the Captain’s dungeon was by far the largest. They weren’t supposed to hunt the toads, and the toads wouldn’t attack them if they were part of the [League]; no point in aggravating creatures that protected the [Village].

About a mile through the swamp, they stepped into the jungle. Syn felt the tension immediately. Kayla was looking around intently, and Jack rested his hand on his sword. Kayla motioned them to stop when they entered a clearing and signaled something was just ahead. She melted into the scenery, barely disturbing the vegetation.

Jack whispered to Syn. “She’s going to push the monster into the clearing. We’ll keep it here, and you kill it. I’ll make sure it can’t escape.” Syn nodded.

A few seconds later, a large green cat with leaves for fur bounded into the clearing. Jungle Lynx, Level 4. Jack made a gesture with his hands. The temperature dropped as an ice dome grew around Syn and the cat. Syn could see through the ice barrier, but the image was slightly distorted. He tapped on it; solid. It would take a lot of effort to break through this.

“Ok, let’s do this,” Syn said. He glanced at the cat that was clawing in vain at the ice wall. It sensed Syn’s presence and hissed, its leaf fur rising on ends revealing vines underneath wrapped together as skin. Time slowed as Syn entered combat.

Wilma’s training kicked in, and Syn’s body got into position. His right foot was forward, his body turned almost all the way to the side, and his center of gravity was low to give him balance. Syn slowly stepped forward, backing the cat against the wall. The cat was tense. It tried to strike at Syn, but he easily sidestepped and thrust the spear into its side then got back into position. It tried to get around Syn, but his quick footwork easily backed it into a corner again and the process repeated.

At one point, Syn’s thrust caused the cat to trip. Syn immediately dropped his weapon and cast Water Blast, pounding it against the ice wall for a stun. He immediately swapped to the spear again and methodically stabbed it multiple times. The cat recovered, and Syn jumped back before it could counter. The process repeated until the cat faded into Mana. A small iron box appeared in its place as the cat disappeared into blue mist.

<[Battle] You have defeated Jungle Lynx [Level 4]!>

<[General] Jungle Lynx Loot has been found. Items added to Inventory:

  • Iron Chip x4
  • Raw Meat [Iron] x1
  • Claw [Weapon, Wood, Iron] x1>

Jack clapped as he let the Ice Shield dissipate. “Not bad, a little slow, but not bad. I see Wilma’s influence heavily in your fighting style. You didn’t even get hit. How much further do you have to go till you level up?”

Syn checked his Orbs.

<Orbs (83%)
Carry Limit: 4 / 4

  1. Water Blast [Level 1 (Mid)] – 64 / 100
  2. Short Spear [Level 2 (Low-Mid)] – 87 / 100
  3. Basic Tunic [Level 2 (Low)] – 100 / 100>

Syn reported his progress.

“Water Blast shouldn’t take too long,” Jack said. “Try to use the spell a bit more often, and maybe get hit a few times to work on your Basic Tunic. The more you use them the more you’ll level up.” Jack checked his wrist. “Looks like Kayla found another one. She’s going to lead it back here. Hopefully, it will be more of a challenge.”

The group repeated the process multiple times. He lost track after the tenth cat. They tried to find higher leveled cats or trap multiple cats within the barrier as they moved from place to place. Syn was pushed to him limit, but he fell back on his training with Wilma for support. He also always had a Meal active, going through his huge Meal stock, including using his Failed Meals to distract the enemy. Finally, he got the notification he was waiting for.

<[General] Water Blast has reached Max Progress. You may level up.>

“I got it, guys!” Syn called out after his latest battle.

“Nice job, it took you less than two hours,” Jack complimented. “Wish I could still level up that fast. Let’s take a break. Keep watching Kayla?”

Kayla nodded and faded into the trees once again.

Jack asked, “Have you gotten your next Orb yet?”

“Not yet,” Syn replied. “I wanted to save up a bit more money. Wilma gave a few suggestion. Probably shoes.” He pointed at his bare feet.

Jack laughed. “Yeah, most people get that as their fourth slot. Their usually pretty cheap as well. Not a bad choice. Are you going to level up here or wait until you get back?”

Syn thought for a moment, then shrugged. “I’ll do it here. My time’s not over yet, and I don’t want to miss out on the experience.”

Syn leveled up. His body tightened and ached for a moment, but the change was hardly noticeable going from 18 years old to his early twenties. He was close to his real age now. He put one point into Agility and dumped the rest into Mind.

<Syn [Level: 4]
Low Human [Rank 1, Copper], Male
Attribute Points: 0

Attributes [Stats]:

  • Strength: 4 (+1) [Power: 4 (+0) | Carry Limit: 4 (+0)]
  • Endurance: 4 (+1) [Stamina: 4 (+0) | Armor: 10 (+6)]

  • Mind: 14 (+0) [Mana Regen: 14 (+0) | Perception: 4 (-10) | 16 (+2)]>

Increasing Agility lowered the Perception boost from Mind Dampener, but Wilma advised him to get all of his Attributes up to 5 to match the Gravity of the Realm. He checked his Orbs next.

<Orbs (80%)

  • Slot 1 [Spell]: Water Blast [Level 2 (Low) – 37 / 100

Syn had gotten Short Spear and Basic Tunic up to Mid progress, but leveling it up caused it to go down a step back to Low-Mid. Ashley did say each level up made the next level up more difficult. Syn might have to pick and choose which ones to level up.

Leveling up Water Blast caused the Mana cost and Cast time to increase a bit, but the Range and Damage more than made up for it. There might be other effects that might not be given a numerical value. “Only one way to find out.” Syn raised his hand and cast the spell. A much larger ball of water shot out of his hand, and Syn almost got blown off his feet. The Knockback felt much more powerful. “Woah, I can work with that.”

Jack smirked. “Having fun?”

“A bit,” Syn said with a blush. “One more test.”

Syn toggled Mind Dampener and the world slowed. Overall, it wasn’t too different than the previous level; the ratio between Perception and Speed was still about 4 to 1. The major difference was the outside world and the intensity of the slowed down time. Syn started to walk around and turning his Skill off and on. At first, he stumbled around when the time shifted, but as he practiced, he got the flow and could react instantly.

“You good to go?” Jack asked. “The contract still has another half an hour.”

“Yeah, I want to test out my new level; thanks for waiting.”

“You’re the boss. Kayla has three Level 5 cats on her tail. Think you can handle it?”

Syn swallowed hard; the most he had fought was two Level 4s, and that was pushing it. “Maybe. Save me if it gets too dangerous.”

Jack laughed. “Will do.”

Syn practiced turning on and off the skill in nervous anticipation. A long minute later, three large cats burst into the clearing, and Jack raised the ice dome over the group.

Syn licked his lips as he examined the creatures. At Level 5, they reached his waist while on all fours. They had thicker vines wrapped around their bodies and their teeth and claws looked much deadlier. The cats took in their surroundings, from the barrier to Syn standing near the edge. They did not panic but started to prowl, tensing up their muscles and taking Syn’s measure. These were hunters.

Syn took his stance with the spear, keeping his back to the Ice Dome. One of the cats flicked its tails. Three barbed projectiles were launched toward Syn. Thanks to Wilma’s training on dodging projectiles and his upgraded Perception, Syn managed to dodge out of the way.

However, the movement made him lose balance and the other two cats rushed to take advantage of his weakness. Syn regained enough of his stance to stab one of the cats, but the other one tackled him to the ground. Luckily, it didn’t have a good hold, so Syn could roll out of the way. But, another cat caught him as he stood up; it drove him back to the ground with its jaws clamping down on his neck.

His Basic Tunic burst into particles as he lost more than 200 Mana from the attacks. Panic caused his movements to get sporadic and his air pipe was getting crushed. Darkness was creeping in on the edges of his vision as he was losing consciousness. He tried to use Water Blast, but the spell went wide. Suddenly, the cat was thrown off Syn, and Kayla stood over him. Her spear was a blur even with Syn’s increased Perception.

Jack was over him the next instant. His sword was out and a maniacal grin was on his face. The two of them together easily took down two of the cats. The last one ran with the Ice Dome down; Kayla gave chase.

Jack helped Syn to his feet and started to say something as his skill turned off, but Syn felt too woozy to understand what he said.

Syn’s neck finally stopped seeping Mana, and he could reequip his Basic Tunic. It was amazing that mortal wounds could be healed in just a few moments.

“Turns out I can’t handle three at once,” Syn said dryly.

Jack laughed. “I’d be worried if you could.” Syn glared at him.

Kayla popped out of the forest. “Got it.” She looked at Syn with concern. “I think we should start to head back to the Village. We’re getting a little too close to the dungeon.”

Time slowed back down for Syn; he tossed himself to the ground as per Wilma’s training. An arrow flew right over him. Jack and Kayla stood back to back over Syn as Jack quickly set up a small Ice Dome over Syn on the ground. Jack equipped a metal helmet on his head, a buckler on his left wrist, and leather gauntlets on his arms; Kayla equipped gloves, and a purple snake materialized around her neck.

“I’ll say you are,” a voice sounded through the trees; it was muffled to Syn through the ice. Five people stalked out of the trees, surrounding them. Two had swords, two had knives, and one had a spear. One or more was probably still hidden with a bow unless they swapped the weapons. Levels 6 to 9. “You are way out of your territory, old man,” the man who had spoken before said. He was the only Level 9.

“I’ve got Syn,” Jack said. “Take them out.”

Kayla’s grin was predatory. She faded out of existence. A swordsman dropped to the ground with Mana spraying from the wound on his neck with Kayla standing over him. The Level 8 dagger-woman rammed into Kayla before she could disappear again, and they toppled into a brush. That left three against Jack. They rushed him from all sides.

Jack’s movements weren’t overly quick, but he flowed from one stance to another like a dancer. Blades would pass inches past his face, but the look on his face was that it didn’t even have a chance to hit. And then Jack cut. The moment before his blade hit anything, his muscles bulged. Weapons were knocked out of their hands, the armor was sliced through completely, and Mana settled on the area like a blue mist had swept in. They tried to cast spells, but Jack dodged or blocked them with his shield. One summoned a monster, but Jack took it out with two quick strikes.

Soon, it was only Jack and the leader left in the clearing; copper boxes lay where the two other bandits had died. The bandit leader was breathing heavily while Jack was perfectly composed. The leader bolted away. But before he made it to the edge of the clearing, Mana burst from his neck, and he fell over, dissolving into Mana. Kayla waltzed casually to the injured man she had cut first. His neck wound was getting worse as he was crawling away; Syn guessed Kayla used some sort of poison effect. She sent her snake after him to finish him off. Syn had to shut the screams out.

“Took your time,” Jack said.

“I didn’t want to interfere with your duel,” Kayla joked as she picked up the loot boxes. Despite her flippant attitude, she wasn’t in the best shape. She had bright blue lines all across her body. She was walking with a bit of a limp, and a deep wound around her shoulder. She had less than 3 Orbs left, and they were all dim. “I got four kills, while you only got two,” Kayla gloated.

“Four?” Jack asked.

“Yeah, an archer was hiding in the trees.” Kayla glanced at Syn. “You alright? This was our mistake leading you so deep into the territory.”

Jack released the Ice Dome, and Syn shot to his feet. “Yeah, I’m fine,” Syn responded. “That was amazing! How did you do that Jack? They couldn’t even get close to you.”

Jack smirked. “These weren’t even worth my time. They only had a handful of Copper Orbs between them. Plus, their fighting technique was awful. I could have beat them blindfolded.”

“Nobody likes a braggart,” Kayla chastised. “Don’t be overconfident. There’s a reason we haven’t taken them out already. Their boss and core members won’t be pushovers.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Jack said distractedly, going over his notifications. “Oh, Wilma just sent me a message. She invited Syn to her dungeon. Want to go? It’s not too far away.”

“Um, sure,” Syn said, still in a little awe from the fight. “I haven’t been to a dungeon yet, except in the Tutorial. It’s not dangerous, is it?”

Jack laughed. “Not if you’re invited. Let’s go.”

The small group hiked north and to the east. The jungle gave way to rolling hills, and they entered the Hilltop Wolf’s territory. The wolves had tough skin with rocks jutting out at odd angles. They even had stone teeth. If they lay down, they would blend right into the rocky hillside. It was the first Copper grade monster Syn had met, aside from Wilma’s badger. Jack only let Syn fight a low leveled one; Syn got bailed out when he couldn’t get past the hard skin and a second one ambushed them.

Jack led the party to one of the larger hills. A huge badger came crawling out of a hole. Syn flinched back and prepared for battle remembering Wilma’s summon, but Jack only walked forward, bowing to the large creature.

“Raz, may we enter?” Jack asked politely. The badger, Raz, stepped aside. Then looked excitedly at Jack. Jack broke out into a grin and started petting the large creature. He pulled out raw meat and fed it. “I missed you too. Come on, let’s go inside.” Jack crouched down and waddled into the hole.

Syn hesitated as he peered into the hole; a blue Mana Shield blocked the way two feet into it. He glanced at Kayla, and she motioned him to enter. Syn sighed and crawled into the large hole and passed through the Mana Shield.

<[General] You have entered Farn [Dungeon] as a Visitor. As a Visitor, you may not use any Orbs unless the dungeon is under attack.>

The tunnel opened up soon after he passed through the shield. Before Syn could look around, he was knocked to the ground with his hands constrained behind him and a foot holding him down.

A stern woman’s voice spoke, “Do you yield?”

“What the-” Syn started but was cut off as a blade pressed against his throat.
